Ferris Sports Update 3.27.24

Today Rob Bentley records a special episode to talk about the success of the males and females basketball as they both made it to the Elite Eight. Tonight we are joined with one of our own sports commentators Sandy Gholston as they get ready for the Elite Eight.

This week’s special episode is hosted by Rob Bentley highlighting the exceptional performance of our men and women’s basketball teams as both teams enter the NCAA Elite Eight. Bentley is met with broadcast assistant, Sandy Gholston, to discuss the journey from GLIACS to regionals. The bulldogs won the GLIACS tournament and really carried that success into regionals. The bulldogs started off the regional tournament against Northern Michigan with a great lead and eventually won 81-65. They went on to advance to the semifinals against Indianapolis, the number one team in the regional. This was a competitive game, and the Bulldogs were down at half. But nonetheless the bulldogs came back at full force in the second half and won in overtime 94 –87. Moving on to their next game the Bulldogs took on Lake Superior State, a GLIAC rivalry that has been going on for years. This game was quite a battle, Gholston says the game could have gone either way. With only 3 minutes left the bulldogs were down 4 points and had to really lock in to get where they want to be. After successfully beating LSSU the bulldogs got their ticket punched for the NCAA Elite Eight. Gholston said this was an incredibly special moment for the team as they were able to celebrate their tremendous success.

On the 2nd segment of Ferris sports update they talk about the historic being top 5 in the nation and going far into the year and landing a spot as the #3 seed in the tournament they have put a target on their back as a team you dont want to mess with and had a impressive run to win the Midwest region tournament to get into the elite 8 matches winning 86-81 defeating three number #1 teams in the nation and GVSU going into the tournament and winning the first regional championship this season

Gholston talks about the adversity that both teams have overcome, with the men making their way through by winning 3 major games in the GLIAC tournament, which was no easy feat, and how the women went from major losses in the GLIAC all the way to the Elite 8. The two also discuss how rare it is for not one, but both basketball teams to make it to the Elite 8, with Gholston mentioning that he has been covering the teams for 30 years and that this is a first for both teams to make it. In addition, they discuss the mentality needed for these tournaments, and how the moment that upcoming opponents are known, that is when you need to start planning.
