Ferris Sports Update 2.28.24

On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update, Rob Bentley is joined by Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kurt Westendorp, men’s Basketball Head Coach Andy Bronkema, and, Hockey Head Coach Bob Daniels as they talk about their team’s most recent games.

Women’s Basketball

Rob introduces Kurt Westendorp, head coach of the Women’s Basketball team, as the first guest on this episode of Ferris Sports Update.

Kurt and Rob discuss the past game on Thursday at Grand Valley State. There was a great environment at Grand Valley during this game, even though Ferris didn’t end up winning this game. Grand Valley had a different dynamic than usual because a few of their starters weren’t able to play due to injuries. Defensively, Ferris did very well, but Kurt said that the girls weren’t able to move the ball like they usually do.

The game this past Saturday was at Davenport, and was a great comeback from the game this past Thursday. The girls played great offense throughout the game and had a few turnovers. Chloe Idoni was able to get the ball many times throughout the second quarter and was able to finish the quarter with 25 points. During the fourth quarter, Ferris was also able to work in some players who don’t average as many minutes on the court.

To close out the women’s basketball segment, Rob and Kurt talk about the upcoming home games against Wisconsin Parkside and Purdue Northwest. Parkside is a very well-balanced team, with a high-scoring offense. Kurt also mentions that Purdue has changed how they play, both offensively and defensively, since we played against them earlier this season.

Men’s Basketball

Next up, Rob Bentley sits beside Men’s Basketball head coach Andy Bronkema. Bronkema is proud of Ferris’s team, having 20 wins so far in the season stating that they have been blessed by having great players and the history of Ferris State has been filled with great players that lead to wins.

Their past recent games were against Grand Valley State and Davenport.  Ferris sadly walked away with a loss against GVSU 77-87, with Bronkema stating that GVSU and Ferris have a good rivalry and people should come out and watch the talent.

After a loss, Ferris turned things around and got the win against Davenport with a score of 75-64; with Ferris’s defense improving from the GVSU game, as well as alumni students arriving and showing support.

Men’s Basketball Senior Day will be on Saturday, March 2nd to honor the 6 seniors on the team and give them a heartwarming sendoff. Make sure to turn in and support your Bulldogs during their final games of the season coming up!

Bulldog Hockey

Lastly, Head Coach Bob Daniels joins us for this week’s segment on the men’s hockey games that happened this past weekend. The Bulldogs faced off against Northern Michigan University in their last home games of the season. Both games were hard fought, and in the end, resulted in a loss and a tie for
Ferris.

Starting Friday night, we saw the Bulldogs and Beavers face off for the 3rd time this
season. The game started strong with a goal scored by Ferris State’s Jacob Dirks, and the game
remained at 1-0 in Ferris’ favor for a few minutes until Northern tied it up. Going into the second
period we saw Northern score another goal to take the lead, and followed that up with another
goal shortly after. Luigi Benincasa was able to bring the lead down a bit in the third period,
scoring Ferris’ second and final goal of the game which brought the game to a close, 3-2 in
Northern’s favor.

Saturday brought an interesting twist to the normal season, being both senior night and
ending up in a shootout. The game was played well by both teams, with the first goal being
scored by Zach Faremouth for Ferris in the first period. Northern tied this in the second period,
which brought the game to a 1-1 standstill. From this point on both goalies played an amazing
defensive game, stalling out every attempt on goal. This remained throughout the second, third,
and overtime periods, bringing it to a shootout. Stepan Pokorny scored a goal for Ferris, and
Noah Giesbrecht stopped all shots made by Northern, ending the game in a technical tie, but
winning another shootout for Ferris.
