On this week’s episode of Ferris Sports Update, Host Rob Bentley is joined by assistant head football Coach Brian Rock, to debrief about their last game against Grand Valley State University and the saddening loss. Rob then sits down with senior hockey defenseman Drew Cooper to talk about the games from this last week against Western Michigan University. Lastly Rob sits down with head soccer coach Greg Henson reflects on last week’s impressive wins over the weekend.

Devastating Loss

Over Fall Break, Ferris State had a game against Grand Valley. The weather was cloudy and rainy, but it started to clear up when the game started. Thousands of fans, students, and people from the area came to cheer for their home team. The Bulldogs finished the night with a devastating 49-28 defeat.

On Ferris Sports Update, Assistant Head Coach Brian Rock joins host Rob Bentley to discuss the hole the team got themselves into over the break. The Bulldog’s defenses started out struggling against Grand Valley’s offense. Grand Valley ended up scoring the first touchdown of the first quarter, giving them an edge over Ferris. The first quarter ended 21-0 with Grand Valley in the lead after they executed a perfect onside kick. The Bulldogs didn’t react well after this, giving Grand Valley even more momentum in the second quarter. Ferris did manage to catch up though ending halftime 35-21.

In the third quarter, Ferris managed to snag a couple more points to score another touchdown against Grand Valley. In the fourth quarter, all hope was lost when Grand Valley got a hold of the ball and kept it from the Bulldogs. Ending the game 49-28 to Grand Valley. A disappointing end to the rivalry game.

8-Round Shootout

Senior hockey defenseman, Drew Cooper, joins host Rob Bentley this week to discuss the two-game series against Western Michigan. Ferris, playing in Western Michigan territory, struggled against the fast-moving team with a score of 2 to 4 at the 2nd. Ferris rallied back in the 3rd, but was ultimately unable to get ahead of Western Michigan with a final score of 4 to 6. The next game, played in Ferris territory, was a different story as Cooper described it best as “two completely different teams on the ice.” Ferris took an early lead at 2 to 0 in the 1st, lost it to Western Michigan in the 2nd at 2 to 3, and then tied it up at 3 to 3 at the end of the 3rd. In overtime, neither team was able to score, despite some close brushes with victory. Shootouts went an astonishing 8 rounds before Ferris finally secured the win. Promising Weekend

The women’s soccer team had a successful weekend, with some big wins in the past few games. Head Coach, Greg Henson, stated “there had been signs and promise and progress all season long,” but that this weekend was a huge step forward. Not only in winning but in building confidence within the new players.

Over the weekend, the Ferris State Bulldogs took on Purdue Northwest Friday. This game proved to be pivotal for the team, starting a weekend of wins for the Bulldogs. This was mostly led by rookie Katherine Welch. She scored four out of five goals in the Purdue game. Henson commented on how impressed he was that Welch was able to score four goals four different ways. All this being said it is no wonder she was named GLIAC Soccer Offensive Player Of The Week – Ferris State Bulldogs.

Sunday, the Ferris soccer team took on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Despite the rainy weather, the Bulldogs managed to come out on top with a winning score of 2-1. Check out Welch’s post-game interview, where she discusses her feelings on the outcome of the game:

Coach Henson is grateful for the good week the team had but knows the work is far from over as the team looks to challenge for the top four. Every point counts as they try to make up for points lost earlier in the season. Friday October 20, Ferris will be going head-to-head with Davenport and Sunday the 22nd the soccer team will face off against Grand Valley
