Campus Conversations: Celebrating Our Graduating Seniors
In this special edition of Campus Conversations, Ferris State University President Dr. Bill Pink welcomes three outstanding graduating seniors to reflect on their journeys and experiences at Ferris.
The conversation begins with introductions:
- Tatum Outlaw, a public relations major from Springfield, Illinois, is a member of the volleyball team and has recently started her Master of Business Administration program.
- Rayyan Arif, an international student from Islamabad, Pakistan, is majoring in computer science. Since moving to Michigan, he has developed a love for fishing along the local rivers.
- Aneisa Williams, from Muskegon Heights, Michigan, is pursuing her master’s degree in social work after completing her undergraduate studies at Ferris.

Each student shared what brought them to Ferris:
- Tatum was recruited to play volleyball and found Ferris to be the perfect fit in terms of size and proximity to home. Ultimately, the welcoming volleyball program sealed her decision.
- Rayyan applied to universities across the U.S., but Ferris stood out due to the proactive outreach by the International Office, the affordability, and the highly ranked computer science program.
- Aneisa initially considered other graduate schools but chose to stay at Ferris for her master’s degree, citing strong relationships with professors and a supportive campus environment.
Dr. Pink prompted further discussion about being a first-generation college student. Aneisa shared the challenges she faced, emphasizing how Ferris’ supportive environment made the transition smoother for both her and her family.

The conversation shifted to balancing academics and other commitments:
- Tatum spoke about the difficulties of adjusting to life as a student-athlete, including managing her time and overcoming an injury during her freshman year.
- Rayyan reflected on the loneliness of studying far from home but found community and support through the International Student Organization and his work at the David L. Eisler Center.
- Aneisa discussed the importance of the Tutoring Center in helping her manage the rigorous demands of graduate school, particularly with writing and time management.
Tatum also highlighted the outstanding support from Ferris faculty, who were flexible and accommodating during her volleyball team’s trip to the Elite 8 tournament during finals week.

Finally, the students shared their post-graduation goals:
- Aneisa hopes to pursue a career in college campus mental health services, driven by her passion for helping others and promoting wellness.
Stay tuned for more inspiring conversations as we continue to showcase the incredible students who make Ferris State University a special place!
